Installation & getting started
On this page
Before you start
Use a desktop running macOS or Windows and a package matched to its CPU architecture. Linux is experimental and awaiting development release; there is no Linux package in the verified v3.2.18 release. You also need an SSH host you are authorized to access, its port, username and authentication material.
Choose and install a package
- Open Downloads and check the version and architecture. Apple Silicon uses arm64; Intel Macs use amd64; Windows packages are x64.
- Compare the downloaded file’s SHA-256 with the publisher’s linked SHA256SUMS.
- On macOS, open the DMG and drag XTermPro into Applications. On Windows, extract the entire ZIP; run the included installer or launch the portable app from its extracted folder.
- If the system blocks startup, check the package source and signature before proceeding. Preserve the system error for support.
- Launch the app and check its version in Help → About. Adjust the interface language and appearance using the available configuration controls.
Before upgrading, save files and notes, finish transfers and back up your configuration and independent data. An application reinstall does not restore a data backup.
Make your first connection
- Choose File → New SSH Connection and enter the host, port, username and authentication method.
- Verify the server fingerprint through a trusted independent channel before accepting it.
- Wait for an interactive shell. On a permitted test host, run
pwdand check the returned directory. - Close the tab to end the client connection. A saved session can be opened again from the session tree.
Continue with SSH connections for authentication and reconnecting.
Check the result
A new tab or a saved session does not establish a successful login. Confirm the remote prompt, identity and command output. The left side locates saved sessions and notes; central tabs hold the active work; the bottom area supplies connection context. Optional assistant areas depend on configuration.
Common problems
An app that will not launch may have the wrong architecture or an incomplete extracted package. Preserve existing data while troubleshooting. If a menu is missing, check the installed version and components. See Troubleshooting.
